Heading North...

I recently wrote a short blog about relocating out of London - (https://www.mustardjobs.co.uk/post/661/Is-it-time-to-say-goodbye-to-the-Big-Smoke-/) and with our capital city losing an average of 3 people a day to Greater Manchester, it’s time to shine a spotlight on the North West. But what is all the fuss about? Surely strangers don’t actually talk to you? Is the thought of a potentially colder climate worth the decently priced pint or flat white? Manchester has a great architectural history as well as a huge amount of investment currently being pumped into the city, so here is a peek into why people are considering the move….

What’s the appeal?
1. Chips & gravy.
2. Pretty much everything London has is in Manchester, just with fewer crowds. From all major retailers to Uber and Deliveroo. If you like the metropolitan feel of London/the social lifestyle after work, then there is no need to panic about giving that up. Forget about Shoreditch, you can certainly get your fix of craft beer emporiums, bars, clubs and restaurants around the Northern Quarter, Chorlton or Deansgate. At the risk of sounding like a massive cliché, this is the City that gave us Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses & Oasis… so expect a thriving live music scene. Apparently, there are also a couple of football teams.
3. Trams. Think the tube, but with fresh air.
4. The global liveability report produced by the Economist reviews stability, healthcare, culture, education & infrastructure of cities across the globe. In 2016 this ranked Manchester 43rd out of 140 - 10 positions higher than London. It made a leap of three places on 2015's position, showing that there has been a distinct improvement, and the city continued to rank higher than London in the 2017 report.
5. The Clean City Project. This is a £14million investment by Manchester City Council to make it a cleaner and greener place to live, including planting more trees and improvements to parks across the city.

The Northern Powerhouse
This aims to bring together the cities, towns and rural communities of the North of England and North Wales to become a powerhouse for the economy. This includes increased investment & modern transport links, and Manchester sits at the heart of these plans. Work will shortly commence on the additional Northern Gateway scheme, a £1 billion investment over the next 15 – 20 years to bring 15,000 new homes to the city as well as green space. The volume of construction taking place will not go unnoticed by anyone visiting, as there are currently more tower cranes in Manchester than there are in any other city. Add to this the increase of blue-chip companies uprooting their head offices out of London to the North West, then progressing your career in the city starts to make sense.

House prices
The average home costs £155,868 in the North West, 67.8% cheaper than the average £484,584 it costs to buy a home in London. The UK national average house price is £233,254, so Manchester quickly becomes an attractive relocation option for those hoping to get on the property ladder. When it comes to the rental sector, Manchester is 20.67% cheaper than London.

Opportunities & salary guidelines
Yes, it is more than likely you will have to take a cut in salary when you move out of the M25, but it may not be as much as you expect. Here is a very rough guide outlining average salary bandings across the North West:
