Sustainability in the Retail Sector

03-Mar-20

So…what do you do? In an industry focused on temporary display and consumerism, is it possible to create sustainable and socially conscious design yet still meet the commercial needs of your clients?

Gareth Parsons our specialist Retail Design Consultant shares some thoughts on how "what we do" affects our ability to make sustainable and environmentally friendly choices and how some people in the world of Retail interior design are trying to change that……

My good friend Ella Pawlik recently wrote a fascinating, yet though-provoking article on career choices and how "what we do" influences our planet. This article can be viewed here https://medium.com/@E_P/so-what-do-you-do-b93f3a2daef4

After considering my own choices, I started thinking about the designers that I place into agencies and how the work they create impacts the environment. The relentless nature of retail interior design demands constant innovation and change. Shoppers need to feel engaged and excited by what they see and how that makes them feel, so often the freshest and newest experience on the block is the one that creates footfall. In turn, this creates a constant need for redesign and refit across all sectors of retail.

But what happens to all of those plinths and POS units?  All the large format GFX that become irrelevant after a single season? How about that elaborate Christmas window display?

The answer, in a lot of cases, is landfill. With so much of retail display being made from plastic and card, recycling rates are low and many brands aren’t interested in extra costs once equipment has been finished with.

There are design agencies thinking about the future though. Some of my clients have deep-seated beliefs in a sustainable and environmentally sound future for retail design. If you’re interested in some of the top interiors firms in the UK and their feelings on a less disposable, more reusable future for Retail Interior design, have a look below:

Some interesting thought provided by Gareth and his clients there, in a sector that is constantly evolving we will watch with interest how the sustainability question develops.
