mustard XP @ Confex 2020

02-Mar-20

On Wednesday the 26th of February, Mustard XP were on the road again but this time to Excel London to attend day two of Confex 2020 and the Event Production Show. Confex is the UK’s leading exhibition for event planners, organisers, suppliers, students and of course recruiters like us!

We set off in the early hours from Bristol and arrived with the show getting into full swing. The objectives for us were simple, to catch up with clients, understand how an exhibition of this size functions and to gain a deeper level of event knowledge to help us as recruiters. With a variety of different talks and seminars available, we sat in on as many as we could whilst walking the floor and generally discussing all things events, exhibitions and experiential.

Topics were split across a number of stages including Keynote Theatre, eventTech, Sales and Marcomms and Association Events Forum. Highlights for us were….  Peter Lindsay’s (CEO, O3E) discussion on “Mutuality” within events at the Keynote stage, using team exercise to engage customers / employees / delegates.

As an avid cinema goer and film enthusiast, I found Fabian Riggall’s (Founder and Creative Director, Secret Cinema) discussion on Secret Cinema’s rise to fame particularly interesting. Fabian gave advise to planners and organisers, mostly around maintaining a keen eye for detail in all areas of an event and how the global expansion is underway across Asia and the US. For anyone that hasn’t been to a Secret Cinema, you should!

At the eventTech stage, we were treated to three separate talks from industry leaders in the Top 10 Tech Trends for 2019/20. Speakers included Matt Coyne (Group Commercial Director, GES), Chris Green (Managing Director, Etherlive) and Paul Martin (Executive Director, Events AIR). From what I understood, it seems NEW event technology is hard to come by these days, however the advancement of quicker and more streamline options are becoming more available to smaller businesses exhibiting at these shows. Dare I mention 5G…..? All I know is that it wont be replacing Wifi at events any time soon.

In summary, Jamie, Josh and I enjoyed the day and thanks to those that gave some time to talk to us. With Coronavirus running riot in the industry, lets hope this is only a minor speed bump going into the remainder of 2020. All the best to those that have event and exhibition programs in the pipeline, fingers crossed for you.
