Hauntingly Good: Retro FX for Thrills & Chills

Retro VFX for Thrills & Chills.

As Halloween approaches, it’s a good time to look back at the classic horror films to shape our understanding of how these films were made that were inspired by retro techniques and how these films brought thrills and chills to our screens.

Dark Shadows.

Dark Shadows is a modern version of a classic TV show and was modernised and updated for present audiences, whilst maintaining its classic look by shooting entirely on film.

In the making of Dark Shadows, they were known for their clever use of miniatures and practical effects to create its haunting ambiance. The creators of Dark Shadows masterfully utilised miniatures to bring the Collinswood estate and ghostly surroundings to life. The handcrafted models brought supernatural elements to the show.

One of the most memorable and Iconic moments was when the Collins manor house went up into flames. The production team utilised a crafted miniature for this dramatic scene. The team filmed the miniature for over a week and a half and then it went up in ‘flames. (Link Website Dark Shadows: retro old school VFX with a modern twist – fxguide)

Alien Romulus

While Dark Shadows is a well-known retro film. Alien Romulus is a new edition to a retro universe. The original Alien movie was released in the 80s and the new Alien movie was released in early August, but this paid tribute to the classic movie, the film follows a group of astronauts as they encounter a sinister force on a distant planet.

Retro VFX Techniques

Alien: Romulus used a lot of practical effects and animatronics. The filmmakers utilised miniatures to create alien spacecraft and landscapes, achieving a sense of scale that resonates with audiences today. Through careful lighting and camera work, they transferred simple sets into immersive environments.

They brought the film to life through animatronics and puppetry, to achieve life like movements and expressions that enhanced the horror elements. These techniques brought so much realism to the film allowing the audience to experience genuine thrills and chills.

The team cast extraordinary actors to complete the movie, including Robert Bobroczky, a 7’7 actor, cast to play the hybrid alien, His tall stature is great for conveying a disturbing enemy. His role in “Alien Romulus” marks his acting debut. Despite appearing in just ten scenes, his menacing presence leaves a lasting impression. This distinctive quality may open doors for him in future roles within similar genres.

In one of the original films, they used a dog as an alien! So, it’s not a far cry from the OG techniques.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice tells the story of a recently deceased couple, Adam and Barbara Maitland, who find themselves stuck haunting their own home. When a new family moves in, they enlist the help of the mischievous and unpredictable spirit.

Animatronics and Puppetry

One of the standout features of Beetlejuice is its imaginative use of Animatronics and Puppetry. It was effective in bringing the various supernatural elements to life. For example, the scene where the Maitlands transform into a creepy version of themselves using creative makeup and prosthetics, showcasing the craftsmanship behind the film’s practical effects.

In comparison to Dark shadows and Alien Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is known for its vibrant visuals and Colour Palette. The bold greens, purples and blacks reflect the classic retro aesthetics of the original movie. This unique visual style has made Beetlejuice instantly recognisable and has influenced countless retro films and shows since its release.

Keeping its original director Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was directed by Tim Burton and has kept its quicky but dark storyline and written by Alfred Gough, Miles Miller and Seth Grahame Smith. The visual effects were primarily created by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). The film is celebrated for its creative use of practical effects, stop-motion animation, and unique visual style.
